Lumbini
- Region Rupandehi, Terai
- Typical trip 1 – 2 days
- Best time October – March
Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the four principal pilgrimage places of Buddhism. The Maya Devi temple marks the traditional birthplace, with the Ashoka pillar beside it and a sacred pond where the ritual bath is said to have taken place.
Around the sacred garden, countries from across the Buddhist world have each built a monastery in their own architecture. Walking or cycling between them is the real experience of Lumbini, and it takes an unhurried day.
Highlights
- Maya Devi Temple The marker stone, the excavations, and the bodhi tree hung with prayer flags.
- Ashoka Pillar Erected in the third century BCE, and the inscription that identified the site.
- Monastic zone Thai, Myanmar, German, Chinese, Korean and more — each monastery in its own style.
- The sacred garden Wide, green and genuinely peaceful. Come early and it is close to empty.

Travel tips
- Shoes come off at the Maya Devi temple, and photography is restricted inside.
- It gets very hot before the monsoon — plan the visit for early morning or late afternoon.
- The site is flat and paved, which makes it one of the easier destinations for elderly travellers.
- Dress modestly. It is an active pilgrimage site, not a monument.
