Muktinath
- Region Mustang
- Typical trip 3 – 5 days from Pokhara
- Best time March – June, September – November
Muktinath sits high in the Mustang valley and is one of the few places held sacred by two faiths at once — a Vishnu temple for Hindus, and Chumig Gyatsa for Tibetan Buddhists, in the same courtyard.
Pilgrims come for the 108 waterspouts and the two sacred fires. The setting does as much work as the temple: a dry, wind-scoured valley with the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri on either side.
Highlights
- The temple Vishnu as Mukti Nath — 'lord of liberation'. Shoes off, and the pace is unhurried.
- 108 waterspouts The ritual bath behind the temple. Bitterly cold, and that is the point.
- The eternal flame Natural gas burning over water at Jwala Mai — sacred to both traditions.
- Kagbeni The old walled village at the gateway to Upper Mustang, on the way up.

Darshan in the morning
The temple opens early and the queue is shortest before the jeeps arrive.
Stop at Kagbeni
Mud-brick alleys and a Tibetan monastery, an hour short of the temple.
Look back down the valley
The Kali Gandaki gorge, with eight-thousanders on both sides of it.

How to reach Muktinath
- By jeep from Pokhara Via Beni and Jomsom. A long, rough and spectacular drive over two days.
- Fly to Jomsom Short flight from Pokhara, then a jeep up. Weather-dependent, morning only.
- By helicopter A same-day option for those short on time or unsure about the road.
Travel tips
- This is genuine altitude. Take it gently on arrival, drink water, and do not plan anything strenuous on day one.
- The waterspout bath is freezing and completely optional — nobody minds if you skip it.
- Wind picks up sharply from late morning; the flights and the calm are both in the early hours.
- Elderly pilgrims manage this trip regularly, but tell us about any heart or breathing condition first.
