Langtang Valley Trek

Eight days into a glacier valley of yak pastures and rebuilt Tamang villages, with no flight to catch.

Overview

Langtang is the trek people take when they have done their homework. It starts with a drive rather than a flight, it costs less than Everest or Annapurna, and the trail sees a fraction of the traffic while the mountains at the top of it are every bit as good.

The valley was devastated by the 2015 earthquake and has been rebuilt by the Tamang communities who live there. Trekking here puts money directly into that recovery, and the lodges are new, warm and genuinely welcoming.

The high point is optional: Tserko Ri at 4,984 m is a hard pre-dawn climb from Kyanjin Gompa, and the view of Langtang Lirung from the top is the best in the region.

Frequently asked questions

Is Langtang safe after the earthquake?
Yes. The trail was rebuilt and reopened years ago and the lodges are new construction. Your guide will point out the memorial at the old village site.
How hard is Tserko Ri?
It is the only genuinely hard day - about a thousand metres of climbing at altitude, starting before dawn. It is optional, and roughly half of each group does the shorter glacier walk instead.
Why is it cheaper than the other treks?
No domestic flight. That single difference accounts for most of the price gap between this and Everest Base Camp.
